(Lansing, Mich.) — In quick action Thursday evening the Michigan House overwhelmingly passed legislation from Rep. Nate Shannon to increase the state’s Earned Income Tax Credit from six percent of the federal policy to thirty percent and made it effective for the current 2022 tax year, an increase welcomed by long-time advocates for the EITC policy Michigan Catholic Conference.

“For this increased tax credit to pass the House 100-8 is a powerful statement that both the executive and legislative branches have placed an emphasis at the outset of this new session on bringing economic relief to low-income workers. Following Senator McDonald Rivet’s leadership earlier today to usher an EITC bill through the Senate, we now look forward to legislation moving closer to the governor’s desk and into law for the benefit of workers and their families. Michigan Catholic Conference is grateful for the legislature’s quick action this week and is equally appreciative for the advocacy of dozens of organizations and individuals supporting this policy.”
